New at Atelier Tibet: Studio Losel
A snow lion, a tiger, clouds like those above the deities in thangka painting: the motifs of Studio Losel come from a tradition that is centuries old. What becomes of them is new.
A label from Dharamsala
Studio Losel is a contemporary Tibetan lifestyle label from Dharamsala in northern India, founded in 2025 by the artist Sonam Yeshi and her mother Kim. For decades Dharamsala has been the centre of the Tibetan exile community – a place where Tibetan culture is not preserved as in a museum but lived on. That is exactly where the label begins.
From canvas to fabric
Sonam Yeshi is of Tibetan-American descent and studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York. Her print motifs are not created on a screen but first as large-format paintings: snow lions, tigers, the cloud forms of thangka painting, the animals and mountains of the Himalayas. Only then do these images leave the canvas and find their way onto scarves, bags and accessories – handwoven, screen-printed, in limited editions.
That is the difference from much of what is sold as «Himalayan design». Here there is no catalogue motif at the beginning, but a picture that someone painted.
