New at Atelier Tibet: Studio Losel

A snow lion, a tiger, clouds like the ones that gather above the deities in thangka painting: the motifs of Studio Losel come from a tradition centuries old. What becomes of them is new.

A label from Dharamsala

Studio Losel is a contemporary Tibetan lifestyle label from Dharamsala in northern India, founded in 2025 by the artist Sonam Yeshi and her mother, Kim. Dharamsala has been the centre of the Tibetan exile community for decades — a place where Tibetan culture isn't preserved behind glass but carried on. That's exactly where the label begins.

From canvas to cloth

Sonam Yeshi is of Tibetan-American descent and studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York. Her print motifs don't start on a screen. They start as large-format paintings: snow lions, tigers, the cloud forms of thangka painting, the animals and mountains of the Himalayas. Only then do these images leave the canvas and reappear on scarves, bags and accessories — handwoven, screen-printed, in limited editions.

That's what sets it apart from much of what gets sold as "Himalayan design". Here the starting point isn't a catalogue motif, but a picture somebody painted.
