Akor earrings were an integral part of the traditional jewelry culture of noble women in ancient Lhasa. The opulent ear ornaments in the form of stylized lotus buds were made of large turquoise stones and silver. They hung at the side of the face, covering the ears and facing forward to show off the ornately set stones. Due to their considerable weight, they were either attached to the headdress with small hooks or placed loosely over the head. This iconic piece of jewelry continues to inspire modern designs in various sizes and materials.
