A ghau (also gao) is a portable Tibetan amulet container – jewellery piece and small travelling altar in one. Traditionally, ghau accompanied the people of the Himalayas on journeys and pilgrimages: inside them are kept folded prayer texts, a blessed piece of cloth, relics or a sacred yantra diagram.
In the Tibetan jewellery tradition, the ghau is among the most significant objects of all. It unites fine silversmithing – chased scrollwork and floral motifs, twisted rope bezels, filigree – with the highly prized materials turquoise and coral. The front or lid is often adorned with Buddhist symbols and syllables: the sacred syllable Om, the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum, the double vajra or the Kalachakra emblem.
