Surrounded by laughing monks and companions, with the cedars of the Himalayan foothills behind him—Lama Jinpa Sangpo holds the chair on which His Holiness takes a seat. Manuel Bauer (born 1966) is a Swiss photographer and photojournalist. Since 1990, he has been documenting the Tibetan diaspora in Tibet, India, and beyond; he gained international recognition with his photo essay “Escape from Tibet,” in which he became the only photographer to date to successfully document an entire escape across the Himalayas from Lhasa to Dharamsala. Since 2001, he has been the official photographer of the 14th Dalai Lama and has documented the Dalai Lama’s commitment to peace on numerous trips. His archive is managed by the Swiss Photo Foundation.
