This traditional wooden vessel from Nepal has the typical shape of the vessels that were used to store spices or ritual dye powder. There are six separate chambers inside - a central one and five compartments arranged in a ring. The old red pigments inside are probably kumkum (red powder for blessings, or at most sindoor, worn by married women). The worn surfaces, paint residue and the beautiful, rich natural patina bear witness to the long period of use.

Provenance: The object comes from the private collection of Jean-Luc Cortès († 2021). Cortès was an important French traveler, photographer, collector, dealer, self-taught researcher and important mediator of the traditional art of the western Himalayas.

Method 1: Measure the inner diameter of a suitable ring

Take a ring that fits well.
Place it on a ruler and measure the inside diameter (from one inner edge to the other).
Compare the diameter with the table to determine the ring size.

Method 2: Measure the circumference of your finger

Take a thin strip of paper or thread.
Wrap it around the part of the finger where you want the ring to sit (not too tight).
Mark the point where the ends meet.
Measure the length of the strip in millimeters. This is the inner circumference.
Find the right size in the table.

Tips:

Measure the finger size in the evening, as fingers swell slightly during the day.
If you are between two sizes, choose the larger size.
Make sure that the ring fits over the knuckle.
