Old Tibetan water jug

This Tibetan water jug, which probably dates from the 20th century, is a characteristic example of the robust metal craftsmanship of the Himalayas.

The body of the jug is made of a warm patinated copper or brass sheet, which is framed by horizontal and vertical brass bands. The spout is slightly curved and shows clear signs of use, indicating a long period of use. The handle is attached in one piece and ends in a heart-shaped plate, as is often found in traditional Tibetan metalwork.

The dark, almost leather-like patina of the metal lends the piece a special radiance and testifies to its age, use and the cultural environment in which it was used.
