This traditional container comes from Nepal and was made from dark hardwood. The shape is cylindrical, with a precisely fitting lid and fine, all-round line decorations. The deep dark patina is evidence of long use and gives the vessel its special character. It was probably once used to store spices, medicinal plants or other valuable ingredients. Such vessels were part of everyday culture in rural Nepal.
Provenance: The object comes from the private collection of Jean-Luc Cortès († 2021). Cortès was an important French traveler, photographer, collector, dealer, self-taught researcher and important mediator of the traditional art of the western Himalayas.
