The Dung Chen (also known as the Dungchen or Tibetan long trumpet ) is a traditional wind instrument from the Tibetan and Nepalese Himalayan region. The instrument is played in monasteries during Buddhist ceremonies and rituals. Its deep, booming sound symbolizes the voice of the Buddha and is used to call believers to prayer and drive away evil spirits.
This smaller Dung Chen probably dates from the 19th or 20th century and consists of several telescoping segments made of copper and decorated with elaborate brass or bronze fittings. The elaborately engraved ornaments show traditional floral and symbolic patterns of the Himalayan region. The copper shows clearly visible signs of ageing and repair and greenish oxidation on the edges.
Length extended 94 cm, collapsed 40 cm, weight 740 g.
