Raktu seed mala with silver beads and colored tassel

Traditional mala made from 108 raktu seeds for meditation and mantra recitation. A hand-knotted knot between each seed ensures even spacing and comfortable gliding through the fingers. The warm natural coloring of the seeds, the guru bead with attachment and the colored tassel give the mala its original, lived character. Available in different tassel colors. We deliver the mala in an elegant silk brocade bag, which we select individually to match the color.

The raktu seed (also known as "raktu" or bodhichitta seed) is a traditional material for prayer beads in the Himalayas. In Tibetan Buddhism, malas made from plant seeds are used to recite mantras; the 108 beads correspond to the sacred number of the Buddhist tradition. A mantra is spoken with each bead, so that a full circumambulation of the mala marks 108 repetitions. After many years of use, the seeds take on a dark patina and are considered a sign of lived spiritual practice.
