This vessel plays a particularly important role during the Tibetan New Year festival of Losar, but can be filled with offerings on any day of the year. Traditionally, it is used with chemar and roasted barley grains, which are filled into the two halves.
The vessels are carved and painted by Tibetans in a workshop in Nepal according to traditional models.
