Motif description:

This thangka depicts Green Tara (Sanskrit: Syamatara, Tibetan: Dölma), the protector and savior from fears and obstacles, one of the most popular deities in Tibetan Buddhism.

Green Tara is emerald green in this depiction, symbolizing her active, energetic and protective energy. She is seated on a lotus and moon throne in a half-open sitting posture(lalitasana), with her right leg slightly extended forward. This posture shows her constant willingness to stand up and help all sentient beings.

Her right hand is open in the gesture of giving(varadamudra), her left hand is raised in the protective posture(abhayamudra) and holds the stem of a blue lotus flower(utpala) that blossoms on her shoulder. This flower stands for purity and wisdom that grows out of the mud of ignorance. Green Tara wears rich ornaments: a golden crown with precious stones, necklaces, bracelets and anklets as well as fine silk robes in white, orange and red, which fall in soft folds around her body.

A large golden nimbus with filigree ornaments can be seen in the background, surrounded by a red halo behind her head. Large peonies in white, pink and blue bloom all around her, embedded in a peaceful landscape background with trees, mountains, a lake and a blue sky with clouds.

Colorful offerings are arranged at the lower edge of the picture, including jewels and the symbol of the fiery jewel(triratna), which are offered to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. These offerings stand for devotion, respect and the awakening of merit on the spiritual path.

Green Tara is invoked to receive protection from fears and dangers, to overcome obstacles and to promote courage and swift action in life and on the spiritual path. Her best-known mantra is Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha.

Brief instructions for measuring the ring size:
Method 1: Measure the inner diameter of a suitable ring
  • Take a ring that fits well.
  • Place it on a ruler and measure the inner diameter (from one inner edge to the other).
  • Compare the diameter with the table to determine the ring size.
Method 2: Measure the circumference of your finger
  • Take a thin strip of paper or thread.
  • Wrap it around the part of the finger where you want the ring to sit (not too tight).
  • Mark the point where the ends meet.
  • Measure the length of the strip in millimeters. This is the inner circumference.
  • Find the right size in the table.
Tips:
  • Measure the finger size in the evening, as fingers swell slightly during the day.
  • If you are between two sizes, choose the larger size.
  • Make sure that the ring fits over the knuckle.
