In Tibet, a chösham (མཆོད་བཤམ་) is a shrine used to house sacred objects.
This traditional Chösham is a Tibetan house altar made of solid wood. It is made of wood by Tibetan artisans in Nepal, hand-painted and decorated with floral and symbolic patterns in bright colors such as red, gold, green and blue. The carved details in the upper section and the lotus motif on the drawer emphasize the Tibetan Buddhist design.
The upper part of the shrine has a niche for placing a small statue or ritual object. It is suitable for statues that are approx. 10-15 cm tall. The picture shows a 9 cm high copper statue of Green Tara in the shrine. The drawer in the lower section can be used to store small ritual objects such as incense, prayer beads or butter lamps.
Such chöshams are traditionally found in Tibetan households and monasteries. They serve as personal altars for daily prayers, meditation or ritual acts.
