Large gold-plated Manjushri statue
This statue depicts Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom - a central figure in Mahayana Buddhism. He is depicted here in a classical pose: seated in the lotus position on a finely chiseled double lotus throne, with a graceful expression and precious ornamentation.
In his right hand, Manjushri raises the flaming sword of knowledge, with which he cuts through ignorance and delusion. In his left hand he holds a lotus on which rests a book (Prajnaparamita Sutra) - a symbol of supreme wisdom. The richly decorated headdress and the elegant appearance are evidence of high quality craftsmanship and spiritual significance.
The statue is made of fire-gilded copper and has a carefully crafted surface with harmonious proportions and fine details, particularly in the folds of the robe, the jewelry and the floral motifs. It was made in Patan, where this form of metal art has a long tradition.
