Hand-Knitted Shoulder Bag with Grid Pattern · CHARU × Thathaly
Small shoulder bag in densely knitted wool in mustard yellow, navy, ochre, natural white and blue, arranged in bands of checks, stripes and a narrow diamond pattern dotted with dark red. The rim stands out in bright yellow; the wool-wrapped dark brown strap carries a knitted shoulder section in blue and brown-and-white check. Inside, the bag is lined with striped linen.
The grid pattern draws on the windows of traditional Tibetan architecture, whose lattices and painted frames are part of the look of houses and monasteries on the plateau.
The bag closes with a wooden toggle and a knitted loop. Hand wash at no more than 30 °C and dry flat in the shade. As each piece is knitted by hand, measurements may vary by a few centimetres.
Thathaly is a label of women from Yulshül in Kham, in the east of the Tibetan plateau, close to the source region of the Drichu, Dzachu and Machu rivers. Its aim is to preserve Tibetan craft and to enable the women to earn a living in their rural homeland. Each bag is knitted by hand by local women.
CHARU connects designers with craft cooperatives in the Tibetan cultural sphere, developing products that bring traditional techniques into everyday life.
