Prayer flags "Four harmonious friends"

Tibetan prayer flags strung on a cord, a set of ten in the five traditional colors—blue, white, red, green, and yellow—repeated twice here. Each flag features a black print of the “Four Harmonious Friends”—an elephant, a monkey, a hare, and a bird—standing on top of one another to reach the fruit of a tree together; a line of text in Tibetan script runs below. The narrative is based on the Jataka tales of the Buddha’s previous lives and is regarded in the Tibetan tradition as a symbol of harmony, mutual respect, and interdependence. The four animals are also interpreted as symbols of the human being—the elephant as the body, the monkey as the mind, the hare as emotion, and the bird as the soul—whose interaction represents the unity of wisdom and compassion. Tibetan prayer flags are traditionally hung outdoors; the belief is that the wind carries the printed blessings out into the world. The five colors represent the five elements—blue for space or the sky, white for water, red for fire, green for wind, and yellow for earth.
