Old Tibetan hand prayer mill from Ladakh

This older prayer wheel (mani wheel) from Ladakh, which shows signs of use, is a high-quality example typical of the region. The cylindrical body of the wheel is entirely bound in dark leather. The body of the prayer wheel is fitted with metal fittings all around and adorned with aturquoise stoneand two red corals . This color combination is traditional and symbolizes protection, vitality, and spiritual energy. The upper cap and the lower rosette plate are crafted from white metal and feature floral relief motifs. The tip is shaped like a lotus, a common Buddhist symbol of purity and enlightenment.

Attached to the side is a short leather cord with a heavy metal ball. The long handle is made of wood with metal ferrules at the joints and ends. Distinct signs of wear, discoloration, and patina on the wood and metal parts suggest prolonged ritual use.

The design is sleek and well-balanced overall, typical of portable prayer wheels from Ladakh, which were often used by pilgrims or monks.
