River mantra stones without painting

Mani stones are stones, pebbles or slates engraved with the mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum". They are ubiquitous throughout the Tibetan Buddhist cultural area - on pilgrimage routes, walls, hills and in monasteries. They have great spiritual significance: they are used to overcome obstacles in life and purify the karma of the deceased to enable a happier rebirth. In addition to the mantra, many stones also feature depictions of the Buddha, Tibetan symbols or the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha.

These mani stones are carved using the traditional technique of sunken relief: The material around each letter is carved out so that the characters stand on the original stone surface and stand out from the deeper background. These are unpainted stones, some of which we add a gold shimmer to in the Tibet studio.

The carving of mani stones is considered a traditional sadhana of piety. Our stones are produced in a traditional workshop in Nepal.
