Large, richly chased copper statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, fire-gilded

This exceptionally beautiful copper statue of Shakyamuni Buddha is fully gilded and is one of the most impressive pieces we have ever found. The individual piece is very large and has a strong, almost majestic effect.

The statue is extremely richly chased - the fine, detailed floral motifs on the entire surface lend it a special elegance. The meticulous chasing work was carried out by the artist Subin Shkaya and is a central feature of this statue. On the back are elaborate floral ornaments, while the base is decorated with Tibetan endless knots and the protective being Chhepu. Alace stone onthe forehead symbolizes the typical color of Shakyamuni and gives the face special expressiveness.

Shakyamuni Buddha was born around 2600 years ago in Kapilvastu, Lumbini (Nepal), and worked for 45 years for the benefit of all living beings. This statue comes from the region where he was born, which further emphasizes its spiritual significance.

Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra ("gesture touching the earth"):

• The left hand rests in the lap with the palm open upwards.
• The right hand touches the earth with the fingers pointing downwards.

With this gesture, Buddha invoked the earth as a witness to his enlightenment and his victory over illusions.
