Large Tibetan dragon wooden casket

This large, handmade, high-quality Tibetan wooden box from Nepal combines traditional craftsmanship with deeply rooted symbolism. It measures 49.5 cm in width, 26 cm in depth and 23 cm in height.

The casket is an intense shade of red and features a magnificent, detailed Tibetan dragon on the front. The dragon is surrounded by colorful, cloud-like ornaments in blue, green, orange and pink, which are typical of Tibetan symbolism. A traditional brass clasp adorns the front. As a special feature, the front is also decorated with gesso relief painting. This is a traditional Tibetan painting technique in which raised dots, lines or ornaments are applied, giving the artwork depth and shine. A thick paste of chalk and glue is applied and painted or gilded.

The sides show other Tibetan motifs, including a flaming jewel, an important Buddhist symbol. On the lid is a floral ornamental painting with a central symbol of good luck. Inside, the casket has a dark glaze and is kept simple.
