Ladakh, foothills of the Himalayas, Jammu & Kashmir, northern India - probably 2nd half of the 20th century
This impressive Perak headdress from Ladakh consists of a long, narrowly tapering central strip of robust cotton fabric. It is densely studded with numerous, irregularly shaped turquoise chunks, which create a powerful, protective overall appearance. Three large oval agates are set into the upper section, which are set in traditional silver work with fine wire and granulation decoration.
At the top of the perak is a square metal amulet box (gau/gahu), richly decorated with turquoise and enamel elements. Such amulets are used in Himalayan culture as containers for protective mantras and symbolic blessings.
Two large, pointed "lamb ears" made of thick black fur are sewn onto the sides of the central strip - a typical feature of traditional peraks. Several long, braided plaits of dark-colored yak hair hang down from the upper section, visually increasing the overall length of the headdress.
The back shows the original traditional structure of fabric, leather fragments and carrying straps, reflecting the ritual and functional character of this piece of jewelry. The condition is good, with signs of wear that underline its authenticity.
