Green Tara (Syamatara) Statue – Nepalese Bronze

A heavy, solid bronze figure with a deep brown patina that shimmers on the raised areas; the downcast face, with a subtle smile, appears calm and introspective. Green Tara sits in a regal, relaxed posture (Lalitasana), her right leg loosely extended downward and her foot resting on a small lotus flower—the posture of a deity who is always ready to turn toward those in need. Utpala lotus blossoms wind their way up over both shoulders; the right hand forms the gesture of granting (Varada), the left the gesture of teaching (Vitarka). In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Green Tara is regarded as a symbol of active compassion and protection. The crown, necklace, and hem of the robe are carefully chiseled, while the high hair knot and the five-petaled diadem are finely openwork. Solid cast metal on a low throne base with supporting feet.
