Handwoven keychain from Tibet · CHARU × Tsoten

A striking, densely woven keychain in bold highland colors, featuring arrow and zigzag patterns that repeat along the entire length of the strap. It is woven using the board weaving technique, one of the oldest Tibetan weaving methods, traditionally used for belts, carrying straps, and bridles; the geometric patterns are considered auspicious in this tradition. At the top is a brass key ring with an engraved vine pattern running around it; at the bottom, a small round bell hangs from a shackle clasp, its relief depicting a tiger’s head—a motif associated with protection and courage in Tibetan tradition. The pendant can be worn on a keychain, attached to a bag, or worn on a belt.

The ribbons are made in a weavers’ cooperative in the village of Tsoten in the Tibetan Highlands. Since 2019, CHARU has been working there with former herders to preserve tablet weaving as a source of income. Many members of the cooperative are elderly.

CHARU connects designers with artisan cooperatives in the Tibetan cultural region and uses these connections to develop products that bring traditional techniques into everyday life.
