Phurpa aus Knochen mit zornvoller Schutzgottheit
Charaktervolle Phurpa, in Nepal von Hand aus Knochen geschnitzt und mit einer vielschichtigen, detailreichen Figur versehen. Den Griff bildet eine zornvolle Schutzgottheit: Weit aufgerissene Augen, ein geöffneter Mund mit Fangzähnen und eine Krone aus kleinen Schädeln unter flammendem Haar prägen das Gesicht. Die Hände liegen vor der Brust, darunter hängt eine Kette aus Schädeln. Die Rückseite zeigt ein Löwengesicht zwischen fein ziselierten Schuppen- und Federmustern. Am Übergang zur Klinge sitzt ein Makara-Kopf mit eingerolltem Rüssel, aus dessen Rachen die dreikantige Klinge hervorgeht. Über jede ihrer Flächen windet sich eine Schlange im Relief. Die Phurpa (Sanskrit: Kila) ist ein zentrales Ritualgerät des tibetischen Buddhismus und wird vor allem mit der Gottheit Vajrakilaya verbunden. Ihre drei Kanten stehen für die Überwindung der drei Geistesgifte Unwissenheit, Begierde und Abneigung. Als handgeschnitztes Stück aus Knochen zeigt sie individuelle Farbnuancen, von Elfenbeinweiss bis Honigbraun.
