"White Tara" Thangka Pendant, hand-painted · CHARU × Rimou Thangka

A delicate rectangular pendant featuring a hand-painted thangka miniature: a detail from a depiction of White Tara, her bright hand set against a red robe adorned with intricate gold ornamentation, framed by shades of green, blue, and violet. Her thumb and index finger touch in the gesture of giving, and an eye rests in the palm of her hand—White Tara is traditionally depicted with seven eyes, one in each palm and sole, plus the three on her face. The painting is set in a narrow titanium steel frame; the reverse side bears an engraving of Namchu Wangden, the “Tenfold Powerful One,” beneath an arch of flames and amid cloud motifs in the corners. The pendant is worn on a hand-braided cord in red, blue, and gold—the colors of the painting—from which hangs a gold-plated Sipaho plate featuring the nine fields and eight trigrams; the length can be adjusted up to approximately 75 cm using the sliding knots.

The miniatures are painted at the Rimou Thangka Studio in Luhuo, Eastern Tibet. The studio carries on a local painting tradition dating back more than 400 years and trains young painters from the region.
