Tibetan dragon wooden casket

Hand-painted wooden box from Nepal with traditional ornamentation in red, gold and black. The box is decorated all around and features a central medallion with a stylized dragon motif on the front, framed by floral and symbolic patterns. The lid and sides are also richly decorated, with fine gold-colored details on a colored background.

The box is fitted with a metal clasp and sturdy hinges and is suitable for storing jewelry, letters, documents or special personal items. The hand-painted surface gives each piece its individual character; slight irregularities are evidence of traditional craftsmanship.

The wooden box is first made by members of the Newari community of Prajapati from Bhaktapur, Nepal. After the woodworking, it is then hand-painted by the Tamang Buddhist community in the Kathmandu Valley.

As a special feature, it is also decorated with gesso relief painting. This is a traditional Tibetan painting technique in which raised dots, lines or ornaments are applied, giving the artwork depth and shine. A thick paste of chalk and glue is applied and painted or gilded.
