Antique gold-plated Shakyamuni Buddha statue with elaborate aureole

This old Buddha statue from Nepal is a finely crafted example of traditional Nepalese Newar bronze art and combines iconographic clarity with rich symbolic decoration. The statue dates from the second half of the 20th century and was made by the master Jagat Raj Shakya (Newar tradition).

Shakyamuni Buddha is depicted in a meditative sitting posture (vajrasana) on a richly decorated throne. The right hand touches the earth (bhumisparsha mudra), a classic symbol for the moment of enlightenment, while the left hand rests in the lap in a meditation posture. The face appears calm and collected, with a gently lowered gaze and finely sculpted features.

The elaborately designed back (aureole/prabhamandala) is striking: It shows an openwork arrangement of mythical animals, figures and ornamental motifs, crowned by a winged protective figure. These representations symbolize protection, cosmic order and spiritual power. The back plate is made separately and painted red on the reverse, as is often the case with Nepalese works from this period.

The throne is richly decorated, including with small supporting figures and flowing fabric motifs that lend the object depth and dynamism. The surface shows a warm, gold to bronze-colored patina that corresponds to the age and craftsmanship.

  • Height of back section: approx. 38 cm
  • Width: approx. 27 cm
  • Depth: approx. 15 cm
  • Weight: approx. 5 kg

This statue is both a religious cult object and a handcrafted collector's item. It is suitable for a home altar, a collection of Asian art or as a representative individual object.

Brief instructions for measuring wrist size:
Loosely wrap a measuring tape or string around your wrist where you want the bracelet to sit. Make sure that it fits snugly but does not cut in. Read the circumference directly from the measuring tape or measure the length of the cord with a ruler.
Note:
The length of the bracelet may be 1 cm to 3 cm longer than the measured wrist circumference, depending on your taste.

Brief instructions for measuring the ring size:
Method 1: Measure the inner diameter of a suitable ring
  • Take a ring that fits well.
  • Place it on a ruler and measure the inner diameter (from one inner edge to the other).
  • Compare the diameter with the table to determine the ring size.
Method 2: Measure the circumference of your finger
  • Take a thin strip of paper or thread.
  • Wrap it around the part of the finger where you want the ring to sit (not too tight).
  • Mark the point where the ends meet.
  • Measure the length of the strip in millimeters. This is the inner circumference.
  • Find the right size in the table.
Tips:
  • Measure the finger size in the evening, as fingers swell slightly during the day.
  • If you are between two sizes, choose the larger size.
  • Make sure that the ring fits over the knuckle.
