This cylindrical vessel from Nepal is turned from solid wood and has a lid with a metal eyelet for a cord that connects the lid to the vessel. The surface is decorated with numerous fine grooves, which are both decorative and functional - they improve the grip when carrying or opening. The dark, deep patina, the signs of use and the old yellow pigment residue on the inside are evidence of long use and give the object an authentic appearance. Such containers were traditionally used to store medicinal herbs, spices or powder dyes and are an expression of Nepalese craftsmanship in everyday life.
Provenance: The object comes from the private collection of Jean-Luc Cortès († 2021). Cortès was an important French traveler, photographer, collector, dealer, self-taught researcher and important mediator of the traditional art of the western Himalayas.
