This traditional vessel from Nepal was made from solid hardwood and is characterized by its distinctive flared shape and domed lid with hand-carved knob. The dark-aged surface with traces of craquelure and wear bears witness to decades of use. Such containers were often used in rural areas to store tsampa (roasted barley flour), butter or medicinal herbs. The rustic design and strong patina give this object a particularly authentic character - a beautiful example of traditional Himalayan everyday culture. There is an old collection reference on the underside.
Provenance: The object comes from the private collection of Jean-Luc Cortès († 2021). Cortès was an important French traveler, photographer, collector, dealer, self-taught researcher and important mediator of the traditional art of the western Himalayas.
