Hand-painted thangka miniature on a moss-green background: a detail from a depiction of Green Tara, her orange hand holding the stem of a lotus flower. Her thumb and ring finger touch to form a circle, while the other fingers are extended—the gesture with which Tara grasps the lotus. A blue robe with gold dots, red accents, and the delicate white line of the stem stand out against the green background. The painting is set in a narrow titanium steel frame; the reverse side bears an engraving of Namchu Wangden beneath an arch of flames.

It is modeled after a mural from the Kumbum of the Pelkor Chöde Monastery in Gyantse, Tibet. The name Kumbum means “one hundred thousand images”; the 15th-century stupa contains hundreds of chapels with murals spread across several floors, which are among the most significant examples of Himalayan art. The Green Tara on the second floor is considered one of its most beautiful depictions—the hand gesture in this miniature is derived from her.

The pendant hangs from a hand-braided cord in green and gold, from which hangs a gold-plated tag bearing Manjushri’s seed syllable; the length can be adjusted up to about 75 cm using the sliding knots.

The miniatures are painted at the Rimou Thangka Studio in Luhuo, Eastern Tibet. The studio carries on a local painting tradition that dates back more than 400 years and trains young painters from the region.

Brief instructions for measuring ring size:

Method 1: Measure the inner diameter of a suitable ring

Take a ring that fits well.
Place it on a ruler and measure the inside diameter (from one inner edge to the other).
Compare the diameter with the table to determine the ring size.

Method 2: Measure the circumference of your finger

Take a thin strip of paper or thread.
Wrap it around the part of the finger where you want the ring to sit (not too tight).
Mark the point where the ends meet.
Measure the length of the strip in millimeters. This is the inner circumference.
Find the right size in the table.

Tips:

Measure the finger size in the evening, as fingers swell slightly during the day.
If you are between two sizes, choose the larger size.
Make sure that the ring fits over the knuckle.
